# Set up live tools

> Turn on live tools for a connection so Steerco's AI can read from the tool and act in it.

With **Live tools** on, Steerco's AI reads from a tool when it needs something, and can act in it. The AI uses the tool's operations in chats, workflow agent steps, artifacts, and presentations.

This page covers connectors. Google and Microsoft accounts connect from the **Accounts** section instead. See [Google](/integrations/google) and [Microsoft](/integrations/microsoft).

## Connect the tool

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open your integrations">
    Go to **Settings** > **Integrations**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the tool">
    In the **Connectors** section, click **Add connector**. If the workspace already has connectors, the button reads **Add**. In the **Connect integration** dialog, click the tool's tile.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign in">
    Sign in to the tool and approve access.
  </Step>
</Steps>

When the connection works, Steerco shows **Successfully Connected**.

## Choose a workspace or personal connection

Each connection belongs to the workspace or to one person:

* **Workspace connection:** everyone in the workspace can use it in workflows, agents, and shares without asking you. It appears on the **Shared** tab of the **Integrations** page.
* **Personal connection:** only you can use it, unless you grant access to other workspace members. It appears on the **Yours** tab.

A tile in **Connect integration** connects the workspace first. If the workspace already has that tool, the tile connects a personal one for you. A tool that only syncs can't have a personal connection.

To move a connection, open its connector dialog and click **Manage**. If a personal connection is yours, click **Share with workspace**. If you shared a connection, click **Make personal again** to take it back.

<Note>
  A personal connection gives live tools only. In a workspace that belongs to an organization, a personal connection can't sync. Its data would reach the shared workspace. To sync the tool, use a workspace connection.
</Note>

## Turn on live tools

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the connector dialog">
    On the **Integrations** page, click the connector's card.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Turn on Live tools">
    Find **Live tools**, then turn on its switch.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The line under **Live tools** says whose tools they are. A workspace connection adds shared tools to the workspace. A personal connection adds personal ones.

The switches you see depend on the tool and the connection:

* A workspace connection to a tool that also syncs starts with **Scheduled sync** on and **Live tools** off. Turn on **Live tools** to use both.
* A tool that offers only live tools has no switch. Its live tools are on.
* A personal connection has no switch either. Its live tools are on.

To change a switch, you need permission to manage integrations. Only its owner can change a personal connection. If **Upgrade** appears next to **Live tools**, your plan doesn't include integrations.

## Check what the AI can do

The **Tools** tab lists every operation Steerco can run with the connection's sign-in.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the manage page">
    Click the connector's card, click **Manage**, then click **Manage sync settings** or **View tools**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open Tools">
    Click the **Tools** tab. A connector without sync shows its tools without tabs.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The tab lists every operation in one table, **Available** first, then **Not granted**, then **Not requested**. Each row shows the **Operation**, the scopes it still **Needs**, and its **Status**:

| Status | What it means |
| - | - |
| **Available** | The sign-in allows it. |
| **Not granted** | The sign-in lacks a scope it needs. When Steerco asks for that scope, reconnect the tool and grant it. |
| **Not requested** | Steerco doesn't ask for a scope it needs, so a reconnect doesn't add it. |

Some tools report no scopes. Their operations read **Available**, and a call that fails says why.

## Give the AI a tool's operations

With **Live tools** on, the connection's operations appear in the tools picker. The AI can use only the operations you pick. A read operation fetches live data from the tool. A write operation changes data in the tool.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the tools picker">
    In a chat, click **Tools** in the message box. The button shows a wrench, and it appears after you send the first message.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find the tool">
    Search for the tool, or scroll to it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a connection">
    If you can use more than one connection to the tool, click **Pick a connection** and choose one.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick the operations">
    Select the operations the AI can use. To select them all, click **Select all**. Some tools also offer **Add common**, which adds a curated set.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Steerco saves each change for that chat. The picker lists only connections that have **Live tools** on.

A workflow's agent step, an artifact, and a presentation have the same picker.

### Let the assistant ask for operations

In a chat, the assistant can ask for operations it needs. A card names the tool, such as "HubSpot requests access", and marks each operation **Read** or **Write**.

* To add them for that chat only, click the **Allow** button, such as **Allow 2 actions**.
* To refuse, click **Deny**.

If the connection is personal, **Allow** opens a consent step first.

## Share a personal connection

When you add operations from your own personal connection, Steerco asks before it uses your sign-in there:

| Where you add them | What Steerco asks |
| - | - |
| A chat | **Let the assistant use this connection?** |
| An artifact | **Allow workspace members to see this live data?** |
| A workflow | **Allow members to run this workflow on your behalf?** |

In a workflow, Steerco asks when you save it. Click **Allow** to grant access. If you click **Not now**, Steerco keeps your selection but doesn't use the connection there until you allow it.

To use a teammate's personal connection, you need their approval. Click **Send request**, and Steerco emails them a link. The chat or artifact stays blocked until they allow it.

To see where your personal connection is used, open its connector dialog and click **Access**. To stop one use, click **Revoke** next to it, then click **Revoke** again to confirm.
