# Preview data with Source samples

> Pull a few sample rows from each table so you can see real values while you map fields.

**Source samples** pulls a few rows from each table so you can see real values while you map fields.

## What Source samples does

Steerco reads up to 10 rows from each table you selected. If you haven't selected tables, it reads every table it found. It reads every field, including fields you haven't mapped yet.

The values appear in two places:

* Under each mapped field on the **Configure Mapping** tab.
* In the **Source samples** dialog, table by table.

Source samples does not change your sync. It adds no records to Steerco, and your next sync starts where the last one stopped.

## When to use it

* Before you map fields, to check which field holds the value you want.
* After you add tables, to confirm they return data.
* When a mapped field looks empty after a sync, to check whether the tool has values for it.

## Run Source samples

    In the dialog, click **Refresh samples**. The button on the manage page reads **Loading samples…** while it runs.

    Each table shows **Has data**, **Empty**, or **Didn't arrive**. Click a table to see its values.

## Messages

If Source samples can't start, the dialog shows a message under **Refresh samples**.

| Message says | What it means |
| - | - |
| A sync is running for this source | Source samples doesn't run during a sync. Wait for the sync to finish, then refresh. |
| A sample job is already running | A sample is already in progress. Wait a moment, then try again. |
| Streams haven't been discovered yet | Steerco hasn't read the tool's tables yet. Try again in a moment. |
| We couldn't check this source's sync state | Steerco couldn't confirm that no sync is running, so it didn't start. Try again in a minute. |
| Connect this source first | The tool isn't connected. Reconnect it, then try again. |

If the dialog's badge reads **Failed**, click **Refresh samples** to try again.
